Salsa Des Moines is expanding our Mission
Updated: Sep 9, 2019
Welcome to our new blog—and you may have heard the big news that we decided to pass along the dance studio space we created at Mainframe Studios to the wonderful Step Into Swing dance company.
It was a big decision that we reached by going through a Strategic Planning process this spring.
We were so fortunate to receive a Capacity Building grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines…and we worked with non-profit consultant and dancer Theresa Stevens to delve into the kind of service and impact that Salsa Des Moines would most like to make.
Even though we decided to let go of our studio…We're very excited to have launched a few new Community Outreach dance workshops & this year's plan for some intriguing Cultural Events.
Bringing Latin dance to new people
This summer, we’ve been focusing on bringing Latin partner dance classes to people who wouldn’t normally be able to access dance classes—with great success.
We’ll share more soon about our recent workshops at YESS (Youth Emergency Services & Shelter) with middle & high school girls…and with the Momentum Art Program that serves people with disabilities.
Highlighting the Sabor!…the tasty flavor of culture
And we’re excited to focus on sharing more Cultural Experience events and workshops with our Des Moines community. Coming up first we have our Masquerade Ball—which will feature the Day of the Dead holiday as its theme.
We’re going to invite you to help participate in this theme too! The Masquerade Ball is scheduled for November 16—so please Save the Date—and get ready to have a fabulous evening.
Expanding the meaning of "Salsa"—in Salsa Des Moines
And finally—we decided to expand the very definition of our name: Salsa Des Moines.
Essentially Salsa is a kind of Latin dance and music of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican origin, influenced by jazz and rock and usually played at fast tempos.
And Salsa is also a spicy sauce—usually made with tomatoes, onions & chili peppers—that enhances the flavor and enjoyment of your food.
Just like dancing is a satisfying spice of life…
So too is appreciating the cultural diversity of our neighbors…and weaving together different flavors in this American culture—making life more interesting and enjoyable.
So by deepening our mission, we plan to encapsulate both meanings of the word Salsa—a spicy mix that makes life more flavorful…and a spicy Latin social dance.
Coming up this Fall
We’re looking forward to getting started this fall—with some small and large “spicy mix” cultural dance and music events that we’ll be sharing.
Thanks to everyone who is a part of our community. Let’s create more dancing and more appreciation together.
Salsa Des Moines—bringing a spicy mix of dance and cultural appreciation to you.
P.S. Do you know a community group who would love to experience our Latin dance workshops? Get in touch and let us know. We're looking for more community outreach program partnerships right now.
P.P.S. Save the Date—the Masquerade Ball will be Nov 16.
